When I first tried to start this Briggs and Stratton 17.5 HP I/C motor it would not turn over past the compression stroke. After adjusting the exhaust valve tighter than spec'd it worked. My friend Bob explained that the compression release in these motor's compression release tend to wear and by adjusting the exhaust valve a little tight allows it the motor to release enough compression to allow it to turn over with the starter. We also thought that it that the timing may have been off and we suspected a sheared key on the fly wheel, but that was not the case. These motors are just that hard to turn over. This motor is now to be starting and running great without a load. The alternator under the fly wheel works gear to. It was supplying up to 5.8 amps which is more than enough to charge a battery. Thanks to my good friends Pat for the motor and Bob W. for the tips (it helped to know where to look for the problem and what to do). I can't wait to install it on a log splitter!
