This takes a 1903 film by French cinema pioneer Georges Méliès and adds my 2006 ragtime piece for band, "Afraid of the Dark." The piece was written long before I ever saw this work by Méliès, yet the movements of the dancers magically fit the music. Only two edits were made by me -- one at the beginning, and one at the end.

It was as if this footage had been silently waiting 103 years for my music to come along.

Of course, this means I'm damned.

  • As this is written, director Martin Scorsese is releasing his latest movie, "Hugo," which features Georges Méliès as a character. The movie is displayed in 3D and the superb actor Ben Kingsley portrays Méliès.

You know I'll be seeing it.

  • Georges Méliès was originally a stage magician, which likely explains why most of his films (at least the ones I've seen) were done indoors. The biography of him at Wikipedia is pretty good.

  • That worked really well! Thanks for sharing this film. I just saw Hugo so this is iceing on the cake. Your music does seem like it was written for this clip.

  • Awesome! :)~

  • Damn, and we think we are crazy now, those motherfuckers back then were fucking wild...

  • It's quite funny that the music that went along with the popularity of the cakewalk (ragtime) was seen by alot of the poeple of the time as devil's music.

  • Huh. Fascinating.

Did the guy who produced this have it as an on screen film, or was this intended for live stage performances? If live, wow to the effects!

    Cool video.

  • This is really amazing! When that couple comes on, they really get things HOT! It was a lot of fun.

  • Méliès was such a master. Shame he was so unappreciated in his time.

  • Delightful! Hard to believe the music composed without this particular video in mind. Nice Job, Keith!
