This is the the first of the post WWI infantry tanks built in the belief that future wars would end up as mud trenchs. The main objective of the si design was for it to be cheap. All this resulted in a cheap small tank with heavy armour, one .303 machine gun and a flat out of speed of 8 mph. The main weaknesses were the very exposed tracks and the one man turret which meant the commender was over worked.

  • Thats the funniest lookin tank i've ever seen!

  • for an odder looking one search for Skeleton Tank

  • i feel sorry for the crew who had to drive this to fight german in those days :(

  • it wasn't that bad when it first appeared no german gun could get through the armour same for matilda II

  • Basic shape, especially front end and tapered back remind me of the Valentine tank.

  • i can see what ur saying about the shape similarities

  • @bearsfan97: You're thinking of the Matilda mk II, most people don't realise that there were different versions of the Matilda but this is an earlier Matilda mk I ...a small 2 man crew light Infantry support tank. There are general similarities to the shape and layout between this and the Valentine but have a look at a couple of pics to compare and you'll see.

  • Thats not a matilda it's a valentine

  • It seems like all it would be useful for is armored recon.

  • @harry4468

This is a Mathilda I though.

It was still heavily armoured but ever so slow and totally lacking in any useful firepower.

Still, it is a historical machine and did pave the way for improved designs. :)

  • In France the Panzer I and II, the more numerous German armour, were not much better than the Matilda I and had thinner protection.

  • Welcome to 1930's tank design. Just about every country made odd looking designs, but this one certainly ranks among the ugliest.

  • lol, clearly the deadliest tank known to man. Tiger ain't got shit on this.

  • The Matilda is a tank from the mid to late 1930's, conceived after the British Army decided to build separate infantry and cruiser tanks.

  • Matilda 1 looks alien cool.
