  • The differences I hear are this:

    1. More "ping!" in the upper register (sounds like you have more control over the upper lip moving forward in the center)

    2. A more centered and ringing sound, sweeter, more refined in the middle register. (as if you had changed headjoints to one with more control over nuance)

    3. The flute body sounds less "thin". (as if you had changed to a heavier wall, heavier headjoint, or higher silver content.)

    Best, Jen

  • I really appreciate all of the comments and those who have taken the time to listen. With the extensions the flute resonated a lot more. The first day I felt a lot more resonance under the right fingers and on the second day I was almost dizzy with the resonance felt under the left hand fingers (especially as I plug the fourth finger). I am really intrigued by the extensions. By the way, I did try just one, which was interesting, but two seemed to really increase resonance.

  • @Greenrat55 reformation of the embourchure blow "into" the flute instead of over try watching a galway masterclass on emborchure.

  • Can you suggest a way for me to improve the sound of my lower notes (e.g. G down). I really liked the sound of yours.

  • I completey and totally agree with fluteloophost on this one. The extension could be the difference of you making Primary flutist in an orchestra.

  • To get real controle over any instrument you have to be prepaired to spend a little more :L so you can get the most out of the instrument

  • It just seems to me that flutes that are made to be "easier to play" often wind up giving us the least amount of possibilities in tone colors. Everyone talks about how much more the flute "projects" with the Foster Extension, but what happens if you try to play pianissimo or play something extremely delicate? All the samples of the Foster Extension I have heard are loud and fast.

  • I think you're too talented to need an "aid" like the Foster Extension. It doesn't create any sound that you couldn't do with hard work on long tones. I think things like the Foster Extension are a "quick fix" for tone problems that require careful long tone study to overcome, hard work that benefits us far more than the Foster Extension ever could. The difference is so subtle that it seems to me that you could achieve the same sound on your own by experimenting with your embouchure.

  • I think the difference is quite noticeable in this example. Nice job.

  • The overall sound is fuller/richer with the extensions. I don't think it's a subtle difference. Thanks so much for posting, and thanks for the performance.

  • I feel that there is a difference, and also agree that it is subtle
