Shanghai suburbs in train uproar - 20 Jan 08

China's Mag-lev is one of the fastest trains in the world - travelling at over 400km/hour.

But residents in the suburbs of Shanghai are battling a proposed rail extension through the city.

It is a rare stand-off between China's middle-class and the government.

Al Jazeera's Tony Cheng reports.

@Daviaz12 The main environmental impact is the vast magnetic field. The line was proposed to built with only 20 meters buffering zone instead of 120 meters safety zone recommended by experts.

Now the plan has been suspended, but not due to the claims laid by those guys.

The previous maglev line has never been economic viable, never be profitable, and the tech is still under development, and not suitable for commercial use.

those ppl are not worried about the enviornment cz' meglev is the most enviornmental frienly train. Those ppl are more worried about the value of their properties.
