This is based on Torey Hayden's work with kids with "elective mutism". Just so you all know, elective mutism was just what people mistakenly thought about the disorder we now call "selective mutism" back in the 80s. Torey Hayden did a lot of really great things (like making people notice this disorder at all), but the way she told people that all or most kids with (s)elective mutism are stubborn and/or abused is still hurting kids who struggle with it today.
