This July, The Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) tested a 23-unit, one-million-pound wood-frame condominium tower to help find new construction methods for wood framed buildings in earthquake-prone, urban areas. The seven-story condominium, which utilized LP® SolidStart® I-Joists and LP® SolidStart® Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) as the main structural components of the tower floors, underwent 60 total shakes from 6.7 to 7.5 magnitude. Preliminary results suggest that midrise wood-frame buildings of six or seven stories may be viable in active seismic zones.
