Examining the Flos Duellatorum and German manuals, we can easily find how to apply an arm bar. The job then is to extrapolate the application of the arm bar into any number of situations, leading to wider student creativity and a much greater ability within them to defend themselves in different situations.

I should point out some translations which might help. Both are from Middle Ages' Italian, called volgare. The Chiave de Soto is the Key from Below. The Chiave de Sopra is the Key from Above. Both Keys' directions, let's say, refer to where your arms are coming from as they wrap around your opponent's arms. In the Chiave de soto, for example, your arm comes from below to then wrap around the top of the opponent's arm. Your arm in the Chiave de Sopra comes from above in order to snake under and then around.

You are the Key, and you Lock the Opponent.

  • hi i'm a martial artist student, greeting from the far east.

  • @Sinderking, hello and greetings from the west!

  • Please don't tell me you guys larp as well....

  • @Bobbladeblade, what is pushing you to think a thought like that?

  • @ArmeAntica

I don't know, just the medieval atmosphere. I actually do high school wrestling and i can see how they are alike, Kinda creepy.

  • @Bobbladeblade, these are medieval martial arts in this video, only extrapolated into other situations and uses. Seeing a gambeson on a student is like seeing a student of karate in a gi...not necessary, but somewhat appropriate.

And it shouldn't creep you out, it should reassure you! Just where do you think high school wrestling comes from? High school wrestling is the end of a branch of the tree that is the Western Martial Arts scene. Medieval and Renaissance martial arts are the trunk.

  • @Bobbladeblade MMA is as techinical as any martial arts out there being that its fairly recent it hasnt be tainited by certain qualities that do find their way in to martial arts over time like the criticism MMA ppl give to traditional asian martials for example are only things that have occured recently like excessice form practice, and "demonstrating technique" is modern before, sparring conditioning and drills over shadowed it

  • @kaindrg

Not to mention Mixed Martial Arts.. the technique that goes into that sport astounds me...

  • @Bobbladeblade ive been watching alot of collegiate wrestling vids good stuff. high school wrestling and sports fencing are the modern evolution of western martial arts though many of the self defence concpets are abondoned for the sake of fair sport.

  • @ArmeAntica cool thanks :)
