Maple syrup comes from hardwood trees. Ash and sweetgum are both strong resilient woods.

The wood from hardwood trees is stronger and tougher than the wood from pine trees. The wood from hardwood trees is used for barbecuing and as firewood. Hardwood trees produce nuts and fruits which are food sources for both humans and animals. Some of the most expensive wood products are made from hardwoods. These include hardwood flooring and oak cabinetry. A life saving substance was discovered in the bark of Willow Oak called acetylsalicylic acid which also has pain relieveing qualities.

Hardwood is anything but 'junk'!

@2gobbler Thanks

Your best bet is contact the Forestry Commission for your county. If they won't do it, they should be able to refer you to someone who will! Should cost between $15 - $25/acre

You would need to get a permit through the state forestry service. I'm not sure about the cost, but if you called them they could tell you. If you want to see a fresh burn you can drive down Nokomis Rd (@ Jakes Rd) south of Atmore, they burned it a couple of days ago.
I've found a table for sale on the internet which is made from ash. The table is priced to around $5,000.

@Jemalacane Those are all very nice factoids :)
Go read another book and I will go carry my torch and kill some more sweetgums!

small statured hardwood like sweetgum and ash is certainly "Junk"! Some hardwood has good value but give me a pine stand to manage anyday!
