Author and former head of the California EPA Terry Tamminen describes impacts individuals can have on reducing oil consumption.
-----
Terry Tamminen on "Lives Per Gallon: The True Cost of Our Oil Addiction."
A special advisor to Governor Schwarzenegger, former head of the California EPA, and co-founder of The Riverkeeper Alliance with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, Terry Tamminen explores the price we pay for each fill up at the pump: the health care costs, government subsidies, economic costs, and environmental devastation, plus the wars and backhanded dealings all to keep our supplies pumping. Tamminen points out that we've made a deal with the devil to stay supplied - but it's time for that to stop, just as our oil reserves will in the next thirty to fifty years. Using tobacco-style litigation against oil and auto industries, Tamminen proposes to use the legal proceeds to help pay for the switch to hydrogen fuel cell energy within a decade, just as California efforts to do just that are beginning - Cody's Books
In the summer of 2003, Terry Tamminen helped Arnold Schwarzenegger win the historic recall election and become Governor of California. He became Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency in November 2003 and was promoted to Cabinet Secretary, Chief Policy Advisor to the Governor, in December 2004.

we did drill here moron -- we drilled and used most of the oil that's easy to get to. We wasted it, like the morons we are. Carter told us, in effect, to let OPEC eat their oil. Reagan came in and said, hell no, lets enrich Islam, its cheaper. American idiots wanted the lowest price at the pump. Here is a clue idiot -- the real price isnt the PUMP price, morons. The real price is - endless wars, radical Islam, Saddam, Bin Laden. Figure it out.

-OPEC sells oil for $136.00 a barrel.
-OPEC nations buy U.S. grain at $7.00 a bushel.
Solution: Sell grain for $136.00 a bushel.
Can't buy it? Tough! Eat your oil!
Ought to go well with a nice thick grilled filet of camel ass!!!

wrong yoganate. that day will come much sooner because we're getting ready to drill right here in the america. we have oil reserves that are 3 times the amount of the saudi's have. the bottom line is that we need oil right now. we're years away from not being dependent on oil. it doesn't matter what people say the fact is we need oil and we need it now. if not for oil we'd be back to living in 1850. alternative sources of energy are a positve thing, but the transistion will take years.

The day will come when the Saudis will plea to America to purchase more oil. Our president will inform them that combustible fuel is no longer needed. I'm guessing around.....year 2050?

Excellent topic good ideas, thank you. I have a 1.5 liter Scion and my wife has a 3.8 jeep with clutchless manual and automatic. And my buddy checked to make sure my tires were properly inflated. You should make a book abou the little big things that automobile manufacturersdo do to make their vehicles less efficiet. How about 4 cylinder turbo diesels, fuly electric trucks etc.

If America conserves her energy use and suggests that others do, the Saudis sell less oil. OPEC agrees to sell oil in petrodollars. I the world buys less oil, the fewer investments in the US they will make because they won't need the same reserves of dollars to purchase oil. Our currency is not backed by oil, but petrodollars which is why when Hussein began selling oil in euros (as Iran threatens to do) we had to bomb him... along w/ a host of other reasons.
