This is beyond brilliant. Name one other soprano who could, or can, sing like this at age 56! Or would sing it with just piano accompaniment. She remains at the top of the list of any educated listener.
So beautiful and heartfelt....And fairly late for her Normas.I know she sang the role many more times after this...but this was harder for her to control as time went on.THIS is stunning, untouchable.AND she looks beautiful!

I invite all the posters that gave this video a thumbs-down to provide a link to all the "good" performances of Casta Diva delivered in the '80's. This was a master class.
Blimey..what superb artistry. No one in history will sing Casta Diva without an orchestra. It is so exposed and one slip up is all it takes to falter but not Dame Joan- solid as a rock and the evenness of her voice is incredible and there is no struggle. She is simply incomparable for sheer virtousity!! Callas is not in her league but interpretation .she stands alone.. BRAAAVVVAAAAAAAA....The audience knows how hard this piece is!
She has some ovaries huh? To sing Casta diva at 56 with NOTHING but a piano. That's having balls (ovaries in her case). She's defenitely one of the best in history, no doubt about it. I wish some current singers learnt from her instead of trying to screech high notes, scream and jump around the satage as if they were having seisures.

@FeelinMinnesota I agree totally. They do look exactly like they are having seizures when they try to "interpret" coloratura passages.
