Uintatherium was a large animal similar to a Rhinoceros but unrelated. Its skull had more in common with Elephants. The large saber like tusks were likely defensive weapons. They also has six bony knobs on their heads the function of these is unknown. These animals lived during the late Eocene period.
Homotherium also had short, strong sabers. Shrews and Solenodons have venomous bites and well...many creatures have bizarre skull, such as Uintatherium.

Probably because they were so big. It's not like there is much to say about the Therapsids other than the fact that they were our ancestors.
