Some solitary bees use holes in logs, etc. you can provide housing for them and have almost as much fun as with a bird house. Mine are doing quite well this year. Most holes are already occupied.

  • if you build a wooden house like this, do you still need to stick those paper tubules inside as nests?

    No, you don't need paper tubes. In fact there aren't any in this house. Maybe I should try some next year; easier to clean up after they leave the nest; just replace the paper tubes.

    Solitary bees such as these ones don't make honey, so I just accept their pollinating services and enjoy the tomatoes and berries.
