WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! The stock market crash of 1929 ("Black Tuesday") happed on Tuesday, October 29, 1929. The "Black Friday" alluded to in the Steely Dan song refers to September 24, 1869 also known as the Fisk/Gould scandal, which was caused by two speculators’ efforts to corner the gold market on the New York Gold Exchange. It was one of several scandals that rocked the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant.

I always loved Steely Dan as a teenager because they were one of the few bands that defied classification. The many studio artists that they employed went on to great musical careers of their own yet Steely Dan perseveres even today with a new legion of listeners as well as the original crew from the seventies. Play on and live on with old works to new followers.
