Look him up on wikipedia. I can't say if all the details are right but you'll get the main idea. I'm told that this recording was made sometime in the twenties. If you listen at the beginning you can hear the scratching of the needle in the groove of the old 78.

The reason it works well, I think, is because of the old-fashionedness of the singing emphasizes the eternal nature of the plea. Thus it will always be with those "who go down to the sea in ships" and those who wait fon shore.

Thank You So Much for making this video. I am so Patriotic and i love mY husband for all of his service he has done while on deployment and i just really would like something special like this for him when he comes back. I'm English, I have a Nephew serving on HMS Albion, a young Dad and I am so very proud of him as I am proud of all our serving men and woman both in the UK and US, I salute the bravery and compassion of you and of naval families that have lost loved one's or have loved one's in service. May whatever god or gods you worship keep them safe. I too thank you all for your dedication and service god bless America and god save the Queen.
