In the early 1970s Paul Desmond received an offer to play at Toronto's 'Bourbon Street' nightclub and he wanted to have Jim Hall join him for the extended booking, in a pianoless quartet. Hall was not available, but he recommended a little-known guitarist from the Canadian prairies named Ed Bickert. So began a rather magical meeting of the minds. The rest of the Toronto rhythm section included Don Thompson on bass and Jerry Fuller on drums. The run at Bourbon Street lifted Desmond out his artistic doldrums and led to a late and lasting series of fine recordings, including "The Paul Desmond Quartet: Live", from which the performance in this video is taken. Ed Bickert's guitar work played no small part in inspiring Paul to new heights. The piece is "Nancy (With The Laughing Face)" Paul Desmond died a year and a half after this recording, in 1977, at the age of 52.

  • Desmond, the silky silkworm

  • Uma coisa é o instrumento Sax, e outra coisa é um Sax tocado por Paul Desmondo! Maravilhoso e único.

  • thanx for the short story.....

  • What a beautiful clip. And some lovely photographic work to accompany it.

  • There's laid back and then there's Paul Desmond. A tone like no other, a sense of rhythm like Bird, an awareness of space like Miles,. The result is poetry in musical motion. If you can forget the world just for a moment, listen to Desmond just for a minute. There's a romaticism that trancends the obvious. A conquest of the sublime through simple musical form, so clear to the ear, so hard to realise. Paul Desmond, we thank you.

  • Pure magic.

  • This is one good potato.

  • Sublime.

  • i love paul desmond !!

  • This man is responsible for my love of alto sax. I picked up this horn at the age of 15 and, I think, I will die with it stuck in my mouth as I take my last breath. Never get tired of listening to this magic sound. To make my story even more magic, I just met Don Thompson (b) at the Vancouver Island University as he was working with the 4th year students, preparing them for their final graduation recital. Another "Gentle Giant" of jazz. Four nights of Don on piano and vibes. Can you beat that?
