    The remote control is for telling it where to go as you said; what's remarkable about this robot is that it has the ability to balance, steer & correct itself as the v/o says. The fact that it can balance & self-correct is phenomenal, & the act of steering in order to get to a destination requires the robot to be able to adjust its arms at varying degrees in order to change its direction to a specific point: all of which are pretty remarkable achievements for robots imo.

    By robots I assume you mean good robots. The difference between DARPA projects and these is that the DARPA based robots are built for a specific function, these are often research platforms, so they don't do things that look as impressive to most people. The kind of algorithms tested on robots like this are what eventually make their way into those fully featured DARPA robots. They also don't usually have the same level of funding.
