Gene Krupa: Drum Solo

So much of today's drumming is devoid of any real personality. I've tried to pattern my own drumming after some of the great old jazz players (check out my clips on here). Oh well, I do my best. Yes, Krupa was a showman but his solos were also musical. That's a rare combination. I've got some chops but I wish I had the musicality of the old players. I was lucky enough to see many of them live in concert as a kid, especially Buddy Rich.

My father told me about the time he saw Gene Krupa after he gotton out of jail for smoking pot. He came out and apologized to the audience for having smoked a joint. He then played a tune.

He started the drumming solos.

Because of drummers like Gene, they implanted the thought that the ability to drum was a gift that can only be gained from pure talent.
Such raw awesomeness sounded impossible to match, but people overlooked the hard work drummers like Gene had put in.
This guy is inspirational ^__^
