In this video I show you how I fixed a Macintosh Classic II that had the good old Checker Board Screen.

I purchased this machine off TradeMe for 2$, the fault was a checkerboard patten at bootup, I washed the Logic Board in warm soapy water, let it dry for around 15hrs.

System Specs
Motorola 68030 16mhz cpu
4mb ram
40MB Hard drive
1.44mb floppy drive
9" B/W monitor

  • I don't think that this fix has anything to do with washing the board as I just fixed my Classic II, i think its more because I removed the motherboard and reseated the battery and the chips, and also cleaned the dust off with a cotton tip. Re-seating the rom chips on my ensoniq eps sampler is a fix for a flickering malfunctioning LCD screen, so maybe it is a similar thing. At first i thought it hadn't worked , but after a few more seconds the screen came back to normal :) Happy mac, Thanks!

  • @pixlexic Actually in this case it was washing the board that fixed it, one of the caps had leaked slightly, washing it cleaned it up & got it to function :)

  • PLEASE REPLY if you turn it on do you need a booting floppy disk to pick the setstem or does it have a hard drive of its own that doesn't need a floppy to run off of? sorry auto correct

  • @slicker41 No, these do not need a Floppy to boot from, any AIO Mac had a HDD from the Mac SE. Also the Macintosh Classics could be booted from the rom to run a very plain OS 6. Can't quite remember how to boot into it.

  • I got the checkerboard screen when I booted it up last night but then my brother was touching the side buttons on the left of the machine and now we only get a black screen when we turn it on. It is really safe to open a machine like this if it is connected to the CRT cause I heard its real dangerous to open a CRT screen.

  • @EuroNeet Leave it unplugged overnight so there is less charge in the machine, Just don't touch the CRT, they do carry a very high voltage. Since you will be dealing with the logic board, its quite easy to get to without touching the crt.

  • @pixlexic no. the caps leak and for some reason washing the mother board cleens all the tracks. is an amazingly comon fix

  • You sir, are awesome! :)

  • @YoshiProgrammer

Mine had the same problem with the lines but it eventually started up, I just left it on for long enough. I'm told some capacitors can go bad over time and they cause a delay at start up - but I guess the situation can be so bad that nothing helps. But mine stars if I give it some time.

  • OK then, Thanks for the help, but I am determined to get this to work . I bought this on E-Bay for 40.00 and the guy said it was working too. Anyway, thanks for the help!
