What is it with the crappy music that is completely unrelated to the video, when all anyone wants to hear is the damn train!

yes i will correct you!! i do believe that i was on a school trip from blackwood to millswood for a marballs competition in the late 90's and we chartered a 76 car red hen with mumbles on board checking paper tickets with a hole puncher. although he refused to enter the super chook cars cos te had trashed every vinyl seat with his dimark 15 mm marker with full strength art line (blue). so lets meet at twin tunnels and duke it aout, i will bring tan, if you want you can bring doug colquhoun.

The longest Red Hen I have ever seen in service was a 9 car train which was a special chartered service for a scout jamboree in the 1990s, I believe on the Belair line. The longest recorded running of a Red Hen set (I stand to be corrected if I am wrong) was after many of them were withdrawn. A pair of 400s were coupled to either end of 6 condemned cars making a total of 10 cars and were run down the Outer Harbour line to Sims metal scrap yards for scrapping.

Anything above 6 cars would have been a special working for a particular reason and would have to stop twice at any station (except Adelaide) as suburban platforms could only accommodate 6 car trains (and some only 3 car trains with at least one platform that would only accommodate the leading car of any train).

3 car sets were very common, initially with a 820 class 1920s vintage or 860 class 1940s vintage ex-locomotive hauled trailers in between a pair of 300s. After these trailers were withdrawn in the 1980s the typical 3 car set was a pair of 300s coupled to a 400. 5 car sets were common in peak hours mainly on Noarlunga and Gawler lines and there were a few runs made by 6 car trains. I recall the 5.42pm express to Gawler was worked by a 6 car train for many years as I used that service.

That was fantastic to see these lovely old Trains still in action. I didn't know about 311 & 402 were operating at this tourist railway. There must be close to a dozen cars that still survive in various places, good to see! I have spent more time than I care to remember on Red Hens and have mostly fond memories, but I would think that anyone who has ridden in Redhens on a 40+ degree Adelaide day probably won't feel so affectionate about them.

These trains could get up to 8 or 9 cars long when running to noarlunga gawler line back in the day

Can you run more than two together? I know you have 3 down there. That would look awesome!
Nope, only have two. I believe it is possible to run a trailer car between the two railmotors
