The real reason is that The Uchiha Clan was planning an attack on the Village Hidden the the Leaves. So Itachi was to to kill his clan so the village would be safe.Itachi took the order to kill his clan from the Hokage.He spared Sasuke becuz he was weak and didn't know anyhting about the plan.

OMG he spared Sasuke cus in Shippuden Episodes 136-138 Itachi explains why he didnt kill Sasuke! He didnt kill him becuase to fufill the other secret of the Mangyeko Sharingan you must take the eyes of your brother! Thats why he spared Sasuke so he can have his Sharingan eyes!

lol i was just about to scroll down in the video, I think Itachi may have been ordered to kill the clan cos of some prediction of a Uchiha who becomes some great evil who can pose a threat to the hidden leaf or the 5 other nations thats why there was a task to kill them all to stop it from happening. but it didnt work out cos there are 2 surviving uchihas, its just a presumtion

@godsmacked101 madara isn't really the founder. he and hes brother was the first to have the mangkekyo. and sasukes is just another style. he would need another alive mangekyo to have a immortal. that's why itachi also gained mangekyo.
