Defining the Future.

The F-35 program has taken a major step toward validating the aircraft's dominating mission systems package. During a 3.6-hour flight Aug. 5, the Cooperative Avionics Test Bed successfully fired the F-35 Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) laser for the first time using the integrated F-35 Block 1.0 avionics software. The laser operated successfully in both training and combat modes over the course of 15 test runs at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The radar; electronic warfare; integrated communications, navigation and identification; and EOTS were operational throughout the flight. EOTS provides air-to-air and air-to-ground search and track functions.

The testing paves the way for delivering an operational EOTS as part of the Block 1.0 production and development effort.

Lockheed Martin Marietta Site Begins F-35 Center Wing Assembly.

F-35 center wing assembly work began July 30 at the Lockheed Martin Marietta, Ga., aircraft production facility and will occupy more than 320,000 square feet. F-35 production is expected to employ more than 600 workers by 2016, when production reaches full rate.

Establishing the center wing assembly operation in Marietta alleviates capacity constraints at the Fort Worth plant, where F-35 final assembly occurs, and takes advantage of the available manufacturing capacity and 5th generation aircraft production expertise Marietta offers.

Flight Testing Pushes Ahead.

With all 19 of the F-35 test aircraft now out of the factory, flight testing is charting steady progress. Overall, the program finished Jul 2010 with 49 actual flights (against 41 planned) for all 3 variants. The F-35s have flown 185 times for the year to date versus a planned 159.

At 1:08 , the aircraft appears to be carrying 6 AMRAAMs, or at least 6 missiles of the exact same type. I thought the fighter can only carry 4 missiles at most?
