The United States' latest sanctions on Iran target Tehran's ability to sell crude oil but they give President Barack Obama wide latitude to pull his punches and avoid imposing penalties.

Below is a description of the sanctions that Obama signed into law on December 31, the timelines to carry them out, the ways Obama can avoid imposing them and the ambiguities in the law that must be interpreted by the administration.

U.S. lawmakers crafted Section 1245 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal year 2012 as part of a campaign to restrain Iran's nuclear program, which the United States suspects of being designed to produce nuclear weapons.

Iran says its program is for civilian purposes to generate electricity so it can export more of its valuable oil and gas.

What actions can trigger sanctions?

The sanctions target foreign financial institutions that conduct petroleum and non-petroleum transactions with Iran's central bank or other blacklisted Iranian financial entities.

  • What matters is WHAT KIND of Uranium they are enriching and how much, you need a lot of yellow cake to make a bomb. You have no idea how much ore it takes just to make 30 lbs of it. It needs to be separated first the good stuff from the bad stuff and then enriched. It can also be done by laser. Few people know this let alone understand nuclear materials the differences in nuclear power Uranium / BOMB grade Uranium. If I was an inspector I could tell you what their plans were based on what grade

  • @WorldwideWakeupCall Seems simple enough. If Iran is on the level let competent people come in and confirm. If no one is allowed to confirm then the proof is in the pudding.

  • Neither countries should have them in the first place. Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty anyone?! It doesn't seem to apply to USA or Israel. I know more than one way to enrich Uranium in fact I won some ore. Yes it's radioactive and I can make it more radioactive. It's depleted Uranium. I am not an expert but I know more about actinides and whats elements are used for power versus bombs. Uranium 235, 236, 238, 239.

  • @WorldwideWakeupCall You hit the nail right on the head. No one needs this crap, just like mustard gas, or the iron maiden. Let's move on past WWII.

  • Good video!

  • @ClassicLugeMick You are so kind to an old fool. :)
