First encounter between Flash Gordon and Dale Arden as imaginated by Filmation and writer Samuel Peeples.

This scene is very interesting for a number of reasons: First of, is far more intelligent and well written than its live action counterpart. Second, it proves how George Lucas is one of the greatest fans of Flash Gordon.

Indiana Jones is supposed to be Lucas' equivalent to James Bond, but it's obvious how Lucas took a lot from Flash Gordon in order to create Indiana.

Flash and Dale jumping off from a plane in the original comic strip, for instance, is exactly what Indy and Willie do in "Indiana Jones in The Temple of Doom". Oddly enough this version, written by Samuel Peeples, in which the plane crashes on a mountain, is different than Alex Raymond' take on the scene, but is exactly what Lucas did in The Temple of Doom! What's the difference? "Flash Gordon, The greatest adventure of all" was produced first.

Sometimes I really wonder if Lucas didn't rip off the whole idea from this movie...

This rare movie "Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All" is the pilot episode made by Filmation to sell the TV series to the networks.

  • @TargetRender Hey man, the recycle thingy isnt that stupid, its really clever, it saves time and money, Filmation invented that strategy and many many others have followed that, and still using it up to this day. :)

  • @TargetRender totally agree...every 5 min on he-man we see a recycled cel...FLASH GORDON still kicks ass...so does star trek!

  • i'm in ,love with dale.....

  • The quality in FILAMTIONS cartoons really went downhill after Flash Gordon. He-Man and everything after it used the stupid recycled animations over and over. This was their best work.

  • This (and other cartoons made by Filmation, like Tarzan, HeMan and SheRa) were done by "rotoscoping", a technique whereby animation is created by tracing over live action footage. Many other animation studios (ie Disney) used this as well. Nowadays this is done by computers.

  • Fluidic movements

  • Man, this movie is a Filmation's masterpiece.
