@bpusupratt true, but if you look at the overall picture, after he fused with Kami, It would make sense he would take on the role of Teacher rather then Fighter

All Goku's friends was lyk that. Yamcha wanted to kill Goku, Krillin wanted to surpass Goku, Tien wanted to kill Goku, Piccolo wanted to kill Goku, then Vegeta. Everytime there's a new rival they take longer than the last to come to respect him.

Piccolo was easily one of the best characters in DBZ. He was in many ways like Vegeta(though Piccolo came first), but he had a better sense of heroics and honor that made him completely likable, and yet kept his cool, quiet image.
