Edited version of the Arizona Actions Video presented at Catalyst Project's Arizona Reportback on September 15th, 2010.
On July 29th, 2010, communities across the globe participated in an
International Day of Non-Compliance of Arizona's racist and anti-immigrant legislation, SB 1070. Grassroots organizations across the country linked the Arizona racial profiling law with 287g and Secure Communities, federal ICE access programs. In Phoenix, Puente Movement and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network called for a Direct Action against SB 1070 on July 29th. With support from organizers from Right to the City Alliance, Ruckus Society, and Catalyst Project, powerful actions took place bringing together
working class Latino communities, predominantly white faith communities, and a cross section of social justice activists nationally.
In Phoenix, more than 100 protestors were arrested in acts of civil
disobedience, and hundreds took part in non-violent direct action protests from Oakland to New York, Minnesota to Mexico, Detroit to Tuscan. Participants from all sectors of social justice movements and faith communities came together to stand against racism and hate. In New Orleans, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network just held a national strategy session on challenging anti-immigrant legislation and building an immigrant rights movement from below that prioritizes Black and Brown unity.
On September 15th, 2010 Catalyst Project hosted a report back and panel discussion on Arizona's National Day of Noncompliance to learn about lessons from the direct action organizing and the latest on national grassroots immigrant rights strategy coming out of the New Orleans gathering.
