I feel there definately is virtuosity in this in how this pianist maintained overall quality of the song when adding such polyphony.

Yeah I agree with DillonNicholsonTV, there is no tempo change in this rendition. However, in the original rendition of the song, after the song stops on a high G, the tempo does slow down to about 60 bpm and then accelerates to like 80 bpm. Which is why some Super Mario World (SNES) fans see the difference.

He isn't rushing. You are hearing so many notes because he took the tonics and expanded them each with a minor triad. Instead of straight eighths he is playing triplet sixteenth notes. For the people who don't have any music theory knowledge, he is taking each note and turning it into three. He is SLOW on some parts, for example his ritard when playing the alternating octaval fifths [C, G, low G, high C] . The tempi are both around 100. SORRY!
