Girls in developing countries are one of the most disadvantaged people groups in the world. Much is decided in a girl's life by the time she reaches adolescence. If she stays in school, remains healthy and gains real skills, she will marry later, have fewer and healthier children and earn an income that she will invest back into her family. But if she follows the path laid down by poverty, she'll leave school, enter marriage by the age of 15 and have children shortly therafter. As a girl mother, an unskilled worker and an uneducated citizen she will remain mired in poverty - a life that statistics show will likely be repeated by her daughters. Education provides hope for a better future.
The 2011-2012 National Women's Ministries humanitarian aid international project is based in Niger, Africa, where our international workers have established the Niger Vocational Training School. This girls school provides free education to girls at risk. The 60 students enrolled in the program receive instruction in sewing, literacy, math, health and life skills. In addition to this education, they also receive somthing of immense value - their parent's promise not to give them in marriage until completion of the two year program.
