This is a recording of a (practice) performance with the Swedish-Italian concert pianist Manlio Giordano. Webpage:

http://www.MySpace.com/ManlioGiordano

The present recording constitutes a "sketchy experiment", where the finale was played at full speed after a few days' work on the piece (which had been played several years earlier, as part of the graduation recital at Lund University).

This recording (for personal use) was made in Malmö, Sweden (on a poor instrument in a large dining room); the entire sonata was played a few days later as part of a larger program in Luleå, Sweden, January 3rd, 2003.

This upload has been made mainly in order to increase the general interest in this rarely performed work.

Quote from the review for the performance in Luleå:

"One should ask if it is appropriate to keep referring to [Manlio Giordano] as a "talent" or "gifted young musician". Rather, we are dealing here with a maturing artist, whose performances reflect his deep research into the works... In the third movement [of the Schumann sonata], Andante di Clara Wieck, he lets all the melancholy and bitterness of unhappy love pour out of the instrument, and then accomplishes a sudden shift in mood and playfully brings forth the emotional explosion that Schumann has written in the [fourth and final movement] "Prestissimo possibile; passionato"... ...[Giordano] is an excellent interpreter of the works that he chooses to play and he gives them a touch all his own, which makes interesting listening - an artist, who embarked upon his musical journey, once, in [the Arctic North of Sweden]." (Patrik Boström, Norrländska Socialdemokraten, January 4th, 2003.)

  • Som vanligt når Du ner till själen av den musik du framför. Överför en känsla som bara finns där! Superbt som vanligt // R:.

  • Dear Mr. Giordano,

Thank you so much for posting your "dining room recording" of

the last movement of Schumann's "Concerto Without Orchestra." For me that movement is one of the glories of piano music, and your playing is extraordinary! Until now in my listening, I've never heard anyone come near Horowitz in his performance of this movement, but you are superb in your own right. I love your passionate and yet sensitive approach. Absolutely great playing--thank you!! Yours, Mark Porter
