Steam Calliope at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY built by Conrad Milster in 2,000 and 2,001. There is a free concert every New Year's Eve. This can be played by keyboard or by midi. Some of the songs on the midi system were recorded by keyboard artists at the New Year's Eve concerts. There is always an open keyboard for anyone to try. The calliope is extremely loud and ear protection is advised. It can be heard at least 3/4 mile away. At the concert in this video people came from 3 blocks away to see what was making that very loud music. This is a fascinating instrument and reminds us of the Mississippi river boats and early circus wagons. Both the river boats and circuses used these instruments to announce their arrival. The system worked extremely well.

  • Disney has nothing that compares to this. The child was not in danger. The boiler was over 30 feet away in a basement behind a thick wall. The only danger was to one's ears as these things are LOUD! A lot of modern music is LOUD! as well, way too loud for most adults over 40.

  • very neat for kids but that baby in the stroller looked pretty close to it. It is bad that I only know that sounds from Disney?
