    Correct me if I'm wrong, but an inverter takes a DC voltage, and generates an AC voltage signal? Also, the inverter doesn't always steps up the voltage.

    As an alternative to (high voltage) EL-wire, you wouldn't happen to carry any side-illuminating fiber optic cable? (As seen on the Ben Heck Show: v=Ri8DBAib0lQ ) It seems to have a similar effect and would be a lot easier to use, although it's propably not quite as bright. (I don't know about it's cost or where to get it from, though.)
