In about a day or two. After that the hunters would leave again for days at a time to find more prey often surviving on roots or nothing.

So the dangers of over eating meat just didn't apply.

Well what you have to remember is that we were originally hunter gatherer's which means two things:

    1) We were far more active than we are today, meaning we could easily burn off any excess energy before it is stored in to fat.

    2) When meat was eaten it was usually eaten in large quantities in a small amount of time, which means that although it was important to our diet (for growth and development) it wasn't a dominant food stuff in our diets. Prey was killed, skinned then eaten.

You definitely have a point—I do believe that meat-eating and fire is what allowed us to survive in colder climates. If our earliest ancestors came from equatorial forests, then I think it was more likely that THEY were frugivorous. Considering our dietary needs, though—that we need mainly carbohydrates, don't need dietary cholesterol, and require minimal amounts of fat—I don't see where meat should fit into our diets unless in tiny amounts. I know I'm not stating facts here, just hypothesizing.

We cook food because our other ancestors; homo heidelbergensis and homo erectus also used fire.

Like I said, our teeth began to change as we began to soften our meat by cooking it, this doesn't mean that were less omnivorous it's just that we were intelligent enough to realize cook food meant quicker eating which meant more time to socialize and to discover new things.

Also fruit was never an easily acquired food stuff, in fact there are no fruits native to Europe.

Our teeth have been subjected to change over the years because of our ever changing diet, it's the same reason why we no longer need our wisdom teeth. Our ancestors had larger incisors than we did because they didn't have the ability to cook their meat however, just because our teeth have become more suited to softer foods because of evolution does not mean that animal protein is no longer a part of our diet.

Though not necessarily conclusive, there is evidence that we are in fact frugivores. Our teeth and digestive systems are more similar to those of herbivores/frugivores than carni-/omnivores, who have long sharp incisors (we have flat ones and tiny canines, similar to horses) and very short digestive tracts (ours are much longer). We're also the only animals that must cook meat to render it edible or at least palatable. No human I know of would or could bite into a living cow and eat its meat raw
