Suncrest Christian Church may be outfitted with a pretty sweet Bose PA system (same as the United Center!), but they are situated in a less-than-ideal room. Mike Ward is Suncrest's head Sound Engineer, and as such, the acoustically imperfect room is his cross to bear.
Mr. Ward was kindly enough to give Gearwire a detailed tour of the Church's sound system, the particular acoustic challenges the room provides and the methods he uses to compensate. Of course, filling the room with a congregation of over 400 certainly helps bring misguided sound waves back into the fold.
I work with flown subwoofers in my church (some MI-grade JBL MRX518S), and with proper power and processing, they can still be felt in the first several rows near the front. Sometimes subwoofers can excite the ceiling itself, and that can lead to distracting rattles and buzz, but I'd recommend that the subject church just purchase another pair of subs and place them on the stage when additional low end is needed. They can be covered with a cloth scrim that matches the stage carpet color.
