@Gasmaskid This is a way of keeping money flow within the neighborhood. It has several advantages:

-It keeps economy local, the money you earn reverts back to small businesses.

-You reduce your dependance on imported materials and energy.

-Your pounds will never reach a tax haven through Tesco or any other big firm.

In other words, you stay out of the classic economic system that has proved itself inefficient, unequal and harmful to people.
