  • @mpluvinel a beer sounds good to me. i'm in japan whenever you're here let me know.

  • @gojuryukarateka I agree with the first part of your message, that was actually what I wanted to say (I'm only german ;-) ) Concerning your comment about long distance runners I said this was what runners used to believe for a couple of decades. However we don't have to agree on that point. Aparently you are just as happy with what you are doing as I am with what I am doing, so let's just keep it like that (if you weren't in America I would probably buy you a beer now and forget the whole issue)

  • @mpluvinel Not toes. The toes provide no support to your stride and can damage your foot.

Sprinters run on the back part of the ball of their foot. The heel might hit the floor a few times, but since they must lean forward and drive hard, the heel is a handicap adding an extra phase to a step which takes more time to do.Thats why real sprint spikes have no heel on them.

Distance runners run 'heel- toe' because they dont lean in their race and they need stability throughout a long race.

  • @gojuryukarateka Running heel first can only be done if you wear shoes. Over a long period runners actually thought heel first was natural, however in the recent past it has been discovered that the natural way to run is toe (or mid foot) first as can be observed watching sprinters. My point is if you move really fast and land on the heel you will not use the natural shock absorbers in your body.

  • @mpluvinel not a joke at all. watch the footwork. always heel first. this is key in all traditional martial arts and more specifically chinese and okinawan. if you do not know or understand this, you have a long way to go and must have been misled by self proclaimed "masters."

i do not understand your running reference as you can only run heel first.

kokutsudachi? this is a useless stance and was only developed because funakoshi had a bad back and avoided neko dachi. this is well documented.

  • @gojuryukarateka Oh dear, if the vids you recomended represent good karate I think this discussion will not lead anywhere, or this supposed to be a joke?

  • @gojuryukarateka Ah, now we're getting closer to the misunderstanding. Heel first is natural when you walk but it is not when you run ( no need to watch masters little children will do). Now, moving very fast as you do in shotokan is comparable to running therefore (and you will see in any other video as well) people put the toe first (ever tried to do a fast kokutsu dachi bare foot on concrete?). Anyway I will of course respect your opinion and watch the video you recommended.

  • @mpluvinel heel first is natural, its how people walk. when do you ever walk toe first? never. you need to get back to basics and stop following the path of bad karate. on youtube search Shaolin Xiao Hong Quan Shi Yong Zhi 小洪拳 - watch and learn.

  • @gojuryukarateka maybe we should define "toe first" and why I think it is the correct way to move ones feet (apart from the fact that Osaka Sensei is moving toe first in Nakayamas books as well, so I don't think it can be that wrong). Or let me put it this way: if you don't move toe first, you would either move heel first or entire foot. This would not be natural and therfore not be very healthy. Or have you got something completely different in mind?

  • @mpluvinel i know shotokan well. i trained under miyazaki sensei in queens n.y. for 12 years and have been with gojuryu for over 30. toe first is either a beginner's mistake or is done when the karateka is out of shape and has a tight achilles tendon. either way its bad karate.
