Mothers have always had to be both mother and father since fathers were mostly long gone before their children were born. The problem erupts when mom cannot do what a father is supposed to in rearing a male child, who must seek out a father figure---regardless of whether that figure is good or bad. It is indeed understood that a mother is so special, so loving, so strong; mother needs to find positive male figures for her son in advance when she knows the dad won't be in the picture.
