Tonight Emily worked really hard and stayed in the class for 40 minutes. She worked hard, never burst into tears, threw a tantrum or any of the "normal" things to come out of class. We used these video clips to prove to the school district that she was able to get out of a severely disabled classroom. We had been told she was unable to follow directions, unable to control her emotions and other things. Since this class took place, she has improved in so many areas...not only in her karate classes.

  • Looks like Karate was the right thing for your daughter. It's hard for parents with kids who have autism to find what's right for their child and what they can handle. They're able to learn just have to do it in different ways. Just like everyone else.

  • These instructors are just awesome working with her. They have done wonders with 2 other kids and even have a small class of adults. Its amazing what those guys can do. They enjoy it just as much.

  • Way to go Emily. I have a 7 year old with autism and understand your miracle so well. I think it's great that u videotaped the class to show the school. You guys are awesome parents. Keep up the great work!

  • I had begun to doubt myself..you know wondering if I was crazy, especially when she was making those tiny progress steps. Just the smallest changes make a huge impact for her. I know you know. :)

  • Great video. Emily you are doing great in the Karate Class!!!!

  • Thanks :) I have an awesome little superstar to tape Mol.

  • Great job Emily. In teaching karate myself, it was always such an amazing thing to see kids with disabilities and problems start to improve. Congratulations Emily, congratulations Emily's parents, and congratulations Emily's instructor. Keep up the good work and I hope that you are able to change the lives of other children the same way that you are doing for Emily.

  • yet one more piece of evidence on how effective a part of a child upbringing can be enhanced through karate training

  • Wow thats great you will be amazed at what martial arts can do. I train in so many different martial arts so I can deal with certain things were I live not just self defense but things like staying away from drugs. Good luck Emily!

  • Wow, that was ncie video. Emily gots some Skillz! I bet when she's atleast 13, she'll be able to take down a 30 year old. :] Nice vid 5/5

  • Lol. I remember when karate used to be THIS easy!

  • Hello ilvsocksmonkeys,

Go to wdef dot com and type in Karate. You can find the story "Karate Kids Qualify for Karate Nationals" It is about not only the first person in history but the second person in history with autism to qualify for the Karate Nationals in the Non-handicap division. Your daughter class lacks lots of discipline by the way. Thanks

  • Congratulations Emily! When are folks going to realize that children tend to rise to the occasion if given the opportunity?

  • hope that we can make as much progress in due course. best wishes
