He is not completely correct. Who says you can't be happy alone? His bias is too strong. Evidently he did no work with people that do not live in the city. I am alone and VERY happy. I enjoy my loneness. Yes, I have family and I am a happy person. I determine when I want to be with people. Maybe a few times a month. The phone is sometimes just an interruption to me. My life is full with animals, horses, dogs and cats. Family lives across the street and a couple of miles away.

I hope that we (modern-day society) are not considering Dan as an expert on happiness.
He's talking about a "happiness" that is causal.
The real question is where and when is happiness occurring? Find that answer, and you will never go back to maintaining your "Emotional Life" as he's prescribing.
