三島 由紀夫 Mishima Yukio talks about essence of Japanese mentality.

Yukio Mishima (三島 由紀夫, Mishima Yukio?) was the pen name of Kimitake Hiraoka (平岡 公威, Hiraoka Kimitake?, January 14, 1925November 25, 1970), a Japanese author, poet and playwright, famous for both his highly notable post-war writings and the circumstances of his ritual suicide by seppuku.

He is a more important and proud figure in Japanese history than he is currently given credit, for sure. Although I was making light of his many flaws, what you say is also mostly true. They don't need to be proud of him at all, but he also doesn't deserve condemnation. His thoughts on preserving a traditional Japanese spirit are too easily ignored.

I think Japan should be proud of him, he was a brave man, no doub about that. And he gave his life up for what he believed in.

That sword 型 is called　正座前, usually the very first form taught to students of 居合道／居合術. The bad part is, I've seen 12 year old American students, not even ５級 do it better. He's rigid, slow, and off-sync! It's actually embarrassing to watch.

No wonder his 介錯人 couldn't chop his head off.

Between that and being gay, I don't know how the he ever expected the 自衛隊　to follow him!

TaikaProtagonist and laserbyte - There is no footage of his actual death. Any footage that you would have seen would have been moments before when he was on the building addressing the the Japanese army attempting to give a speech on the importance of a rebuilt Japanese army. Any footage that would have followed would have been the NHK newsreels of the aftermath of the event. Although I have seen several crime scene photos just after the suicide circulating around.
