Zulu (1964), directed by Cy Endfield, is a historical war drama that re-creates the 1879 battle of Rorke's Drift. Stanley Baker (also producer) heads a remarkable cast, including Michael Caine in a star making performance playing against type as a toffee-nosed lieutenant.

"...who could ever forget the approaching sound of the 4,000 Zulu warriors before we see them, while Richard Burton's narration is genuinely moving."

Trivia - Michael Caine originally auditioned for the part of Private Henry Hook, but was beaten to it by James Booth.
James Booth's character, Private Henry Hook, was required to be in the field hospital which were mostly interior shots. Therefore he did not travel with the cast and crew to South Africa for the filming.

  • Very Good Thank You******

  • Thanks Steve.

  • I have 2 copies of that on vinyl both outersleeves are different .., sadly one record is damage when I got it .. managed to buy another much later ...

  • The UK first press has a yellow/orange label and flipback sleeve EMBER NR 5012.

    Thanks for visiting the channel.

  • "Front rank, FIRE"

    "Middle rank, FIRE"

    "Rear rank, FIRE!!"

A movie classic from beginning to end. I must have seen it dozens of times but when it's on TV, I can't help watching it through to the end.

I would add apart that from the basic premise of Zulus attacking the mission over a day and a night, the rest of the film is largely fictional. For instance the Zulus only had a few flintlocks not rifles, Bromhead (Caine) was deaf and Hook was a sick cook not a barrack room lawyer and waster.

  • Thanks ...great comment

  • Classic film as others point out, whatever the politics and sociological interpretation, the performances are second to none, outstanding score, never tire of this film and just today bought it on DVD for the 'old collection', Richard Burton's voice-over at the end enhanced it even more.

  • @Tapiola2007 Inventions, the wc radar t.v. telephone the web cats eyes on roads electric motor steam engine tin can light bulb look, just go back to your own country and stop bugging me
  • @theAteamgirl Give me 10 British inventions that have changed and improved human civilization and I'll give you 10 non-British inventions of equal or greater importance. My point is not to play down Britain's role but to temper your stupid suggestion that Britain has somehow single-handedly made the world a better place.

  • @theAteamgirl Concerning Rorke's Drift, the British forces there certainly put up a gallant defence but they did not defeat the zulus and they were extrememly fortunate that the relief column came when it did. Had the column been delayed, everyone at Rorke's Drift would have been killed and we would have been talking about something completely different.

  • Silly little girl. First of all, I'm English so where do you suggest I go? Second, you seem to make a habit of refusing to reply to comments or messages when you find yourself and your dumb ídeas criticised - very open-minded. You can reply or not, all the same to me. However, my commens will be publicly available and readers will know I put you in your place.

  • @Tapiola2007 ype in on google it states about British inventions, the Falklands belong to Britain, unless You are an argie ? type in on google world's greatest military defence, you will be saying next that Lord Rothschild does not own the American federal reserve bank I am not replying any more to your comments, if you don't like Britain, then go back to whatever country you came from
  • @theAteamgirl What is your source for claiming that "70% of the world's greatest inventions are British"? You weren't even born when Britain shamelessly provoked a 'war' with Argentina and used its military advantage to overcome a demoralised, unprofessional and youthful enemy for domestic political reasons. Who acknowledges Rourke's Drift as the greatest military defence ever? I called your comment stupid. Even smart people say stupid things. Don't mistake love of country for superiority.

  • @Tapiola2007

I do not dismiss achievements of other nations,

I could say that 70% of the world's greatest inventions are British,

I could say that Great Britain defeating Argentina in 74 days was brilliant,

but, Rorke's Drift was the acknowledged greatest military defence = ever !

    130 troops against 4,500 zulus,

    cmon that's almost beyond belief,

I don't call anyone stupid especially if I do not know them, as you do !

  • @theAteamgirl What a stupid comment! First of all, your insight into the relative achievements of other nations is obviously limited. Secondly, basing your appreciation of the British Empire on a film (albeit a great one) is infantile. The defence of Rourke's Drift was certainly well executed and deserves our admiration; however, the subsequent legendary portrayal of the action, including the number of VCs awarded, was cooked up to mask the embarrassment and tragedy of Isandhlwana.

  • @WALTERBROADDUS They kept it during the Sudan Wars, but only in some secondary units, most units coming from England had the new Enfield, a bolt action rifle.
