Hippos don't come across pumpkins in the wild! At the Zoo, we give our hippos pumpkins as it encourages them to forage for their food.

As it rolls about, the hippos have to keep moving after it, and when they finally break it open, there are new smells and tastes for them to explore.

Enrichment is used in zoos as a way of enhancing the environment an animal lives in. It's anything we do here at Auckland Zoo to encourage and stimulate natural behaviours in our animals.
