don't use a credit card 'anywhere' where it's going to leave your sight? that sounds pretty tough, given that it cuts out a lot of high quality restaurants. and how will skimming look different than normal swiping?

There are pros and cons to every approach. Using a credit or debit card leaves one susceptible to these types of theft involving card skimmers or identity scams, where as cash allows one to fall victim to robbery. If I'm walking around with a pocket full of cash and someone robs me, that's it, my money is gone. Where as if someone robs me of my credit card, I simply call the creditor and inform them of the situation. Problem solved and I didn't lose a dime, just my pride.
