While the ocean cliff setting for Tulum is spectacular, the architecture is very poor in quality even by post Classical period standards.

If you every return to Cancun, take the day excursion over to Chichen Itza.  A couple of hours in a modern and well provisioned double decker bus.

As for the architecture of Chichen Itza...well, there's a reason it is used in tourist advertisements for Mexico. Make sure you go to the top of "El Castillo." The view is like standing in mid-air.
