Mattingly's spare-making was always jittery at best. As far as his style, I'd label it "slow cranker"... and I don't believe it would work in today's game, with its emphasis on speed, speed and more speed.
Very true - especially when you put a good amount of rotation and lack of tilt into the mix.

Don't ask me why, but as far as I'm concerned, Jeff's spare making wasn't where it was supposed to be.
