Robert de Visee: Chaconne, A_mi_la_mineur, ms. Saizenay, p. 258. The instrument is "Théorbe de pieces" in d. This piece is marked "A minor" in Saizenay ms. When played by my "théorbe de pieces" in d (a'=392Hz), it sounds like C minor to ears tuned in modern a'=440Hz. My archlute (Stephen Barber, 1987) is stringed and tuned to a high theorbo. More French theorbo music in page http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/wikla/mus/Tiorba/deVisee/ . Arto Wikla 13.4.2009.

  • great rendition!!

may I ask why this one is in a different tuning from the version of the same song done by lislevand on youtube?

    thanks!

  • Thanks thoyo!

The instrument I play is "Théorbe de pieces" in d, French solo theorbo. And when I use the old French tuning, where a'=392Hz this piece sounds like C minor to ears tuned in modern a'=440Hz.. I suppose Rolf plays a bigger theorbo in a (a'=415) and so his version sounds in modern sense in F# minor?

  • Sorry, Rolf should sound in modern Ab or G# minor.... ;-)

(The different tunings and different a' pitches are complicated...

  • One of the most beautiful pieces by De Visée (in my opinion). Well done Arto !

    Thanks

    Val

  • Thanks Val! :-)

Yes, this piece is really great - and I don't mean my modest performance... There is something so natural, simple and true in this composition that it reminds me of Mozart and Schubert.

  • This is a great piece...well played. I have beent trying to find a good arrangement of this piece for six string classical guitar, but there is no Chaconne is A minor suite. Do you have any suggestion as to which suite this piece might be in?

    Thank you

  • I give you much credit because this is extremely difficult. Kudos

  • interesting! thanks for your response, and for the tablature you put on your website... i'm going to use it for a performance next week..

    keep up the great work!!!

  • I second Luthval here. I adore this piece greatly. The diapason use is so good!

Well played by the way - a good interpretation :).

  • Dear Arto, thank you very much for sharing your beautiful music that transports us into a century earlier!

I wish you a good week, my best wishes, Rosy.
