@gsgeiger Thanks so much. For my money, VC is a world-class dramatic baritone.
NOT saying he's better than Ruffo, Bechi, Stracciari, Warren, MacNeil, Merrill, Milnes, Warren, etc. Just that he is in their class.
I've no idea why some YouTubers disagree so vehemently. It is however telling that NONE of them have listed their favorite baritones, assuming they have any:) --
@MrLumsdenew When you say "without emotion," "nothing of" etc.," I simply don't understand where you are coming from. I'm not saying that VC's is an "Eri tu" for the ages, but it is high heavens above what we have heard from most baritones since. VC -- here at least -- has a large, wide-ranging and technically accomplished dramatic baritone. Don't those qualities matter to you, or do you dispute them as well? What are YOUR favorite renditions of this aria?
It is interesing to see comments from viewers that dislike this performance. So I wish to comment positively. I have listened to Vladimir from the house, and from the stage (standing next to him) and I would like some of his critics to stand in his shoes and attempt to do better. If you think you know about singing, and you think this was not good, you are mistaken. He does things easily that others can not begin to comprehend.
How disappointing to hear this baritone after some twenty years, His `eri tu` was sung straight through, without emotion, nothing of the character, Renato. Nothing of the initial fury, the change of mood was ignored, the sorrow in the latter part of this work, wasted the work of Verdi, even allowing for a Church setting, the piece was sung with no expression that would explain the background to the music.. Disappointing.!
