PLEASE READ:

This video is for the final round of ASBgurl834's contest. The challenge was to portray why you made videos for Youtube, without using text in the video to explain.

When I first started looking to buy a new horse I had a little set of rules in my head. I wanted him to be big, I wanted him to be handsome, I wanted him to always be perfectly behaved, I wanted him to be an amazing performance horse- I pretty much wanted the perfect horse.
I first bought Teddy when I was 14 years old, he was nearly 5 years old and unbroken. He was a nice looking horse, very quiet to handle and had a nice trot and canter when he was in the paddock. I made the decision to buy him, and then moved him to a different property and broke him in.
The whole breaking in process was virtually hassle free, and I was riding him after a few weeks. Things were going extremely well with him, he had a beautiful nature and big expressive movements. And then I guess it all got to my head...
I started fussing over things, finding lots of stupid little flaws in him. Pushing him hard during his training, obsessing about collection and jumping as high as possible. Teddy wouldn't do these things for me. And we used to fight.
His behavior turned for the worst, he got into the habit of rearing, bucking, biting, bolting... this made me angry- I had bought this horse for performance and he was not performing for me! I can't tell you how much we fought, how much we didn't get along, how much force I was using when I was training him, how much I didn't consider him.
It was about 1 month of fighting between us both when I realized- Teddy is a horse. He's not a machine. He's gentle, he's sensitive, he doesn't know about winning, he doesn't know about perfection. Teddy is Teddy, why was I trying to force him into becoming something he's not?
With this new attitude, this attitude of acceptance, I was able to deeply connect with him and create a strong bond. I didn't care for collection, I didn't care about how high the jumps were- all I cared about was if my horse was happy. I was rewarding him for being him, and he started to reward me back. With out me even trying to perfect him, he started to become amazing. We've become this unstoppable team- I'll do anything for him, and he'll do anything for me. To this day I still don't care for collection, but Teddy rewards me and works in a beautiful frame when we do dressage. Teddy will literally jump anything for me, no matter how big or scary- he is a horse that will literally never refuse. Nothing will come between me and my horse, my horse that has always been perfect, because he is himself.

The reason I make videos is this- Love your horse for who he is and the rewards he brings you out of love and trust for you. Don't get caught up in the fake world of perfection and winning.
