Just one scene from Gregory Doran's terrific production of Hamlet. My favourite scene of the play, act III scene 4, where Hamlet visits his mother, Gertrude. Part 1.

  • Good lord, David Tennant does insane well.

Granted, he does everything well, but this is brutal. I love it. His talent blows my mind every time.

  • Maybe it's my pre-existing love for all things Tennant, but I love this version of Hamlet. I think this scene is the best, because he's almost scary in how manic he gets, but then he also manages to cam down and sound more sane in certain parts. I think he's fantastic.

  • @rocketwoofer I love the quiet, dangerous, "maybe he's actually broken" kind of crazy, but at the parts where Hamlet is acting crazy I think Tennant goes a little too hammy with the faces and the voices and whatnot. Most actors play the wacky craziness with whimsy, but Tennant goes more silly than whimsical imo. I guess that's where I disconnect, and it kind of hurts my perception of him for the rest of the play, in which he does do a more than respectable job.

    Still, to each their own.

  • @Wodism Well, I do enjoy his acting insane the most when it is that quiet, dangerous kind of crazy. Then, it's all in his eyes and he knows how to make you want to want to duck behind the couch.

  • @rocketwoofer I understand it differs. I really like parts of Tennant's Hamlet, but I think he goes a bit overboard with the acting crazy is all. It's just off putting. I'm just saying it gets a bit hammy, and too hammy for me at times.

  • @Wodism You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but just keep in mind that many have an opinion that differs, including many of the critics who reviewed his performance. I also doubt if he would be representing Shakespeare's Hamlet on a Royal Mail commemorative stamp if he was indeed that bad.

  • Gibson and Branagh are better. Just because he does an awesome Doctor doesn't make him a good Hamlet. Way too hammy. At least Gibson's Hamlet warranted hamminess, but this. Just no.

  • @LongLiveHumour Lol my name's Oliver Davies. Sorry, I'm probably not supposed to say Lol on a video of a Shakespeare production am I?

  • I've seen Hamlet jillions of times, but I think David Tennant is the best. Patrick Stewart is always best.

  • die at the hands of david tennant, kenneth branagh, die....

  • @1:00 he sounds exactly like The Dr.
