since the opengl drivers for ati cards do not have opengl texture memory, texture intensive games will lag

as a note with the current opengl drivers, if you have a 6800 and plan to move to a 3850 then you will enjoy it fully if you use direct 3d games, but if you mostly play opengl games like second life then you will have more lag than you ever thought was possible

  • i had the same problem with 5850 hd ati, but i had 256mb in buffer textures . no 0mb. when i open 2 sl, it become very slowly , and crash. how i did fix it ? , go to preferences , hardware option, and setup the buffer in 64mb, so will fly you computer.

  • @xeneizeh For a while they made the changed to show the memory listed but if you use a actual memory monitor like rivatuner (have not tried it on the HD5000 series yet), you will see that opengl is still using system memory instead of video memory, when compared to an nvidia card. this is purely a driver problem thats not on ati's priority to fix since direct x dominates the game market.

  • it seems ati dont want their porduct runing OGL because of their FireGL product wich r based on same gpus that radeon has, but at hi end prices, i.m runing hollywood FX (openGL video editing APP) on an ATI 3850 AGP and im getting worse performance than with my old ati 9800pro. Go buy an NVidia :o(

  • I had a similar problem when I moved a computer from Windows to Linux. Because Linux is almost entirely OpenGL, every time I started the computer the graphics were garbled if they showed up at all, and Blender hardly worked at all and it torqued the heck out of me 'till I read about ATI not supporting OpenGL and ripped out the NVidia from an older computer; it's been smooth as silk ever since, even though the card's much older. =\ Not buying ATI anymore unless they fix it. =\

  • same for me ati 4850 512 Mb never uses mere then 34 MB , it always uses the onboard ram , and when the game uses the paged memory on hardisk ,then it uses that slow memory . why the hell i need a 1 or 2 gig graphics card while it uses only that less . yeah vista and window 7 like to use onboard ram memory instead of that good fast expencif graphics card memory.

  • I'm running the 1GB XFX Radeon 6870 and getting 32fps in second life typically. the reason you're seeing low fps in second life is because you're running it in a window and ATI cards only run at full speed on fullscreen programs. that's also why you're not seeing any memory utilization on your monitoring program. Run SL fullscreen, non-windowed and it will use the video memory.

  • I just got a 7800gs used on ebay waiting for it to come. All I can say if you have one of these pos ATI cards get rid of it! Damn thing suck on secondlife and I can't take it anymore. Absolutely correct, 0 texture memory does definitely equal lag. Piss poor job ATI I will boycott you and your amd asses forever!!!!

  • i did low the buffer at 64mb, and i can open multiple SL, but textures are not quality , if i setup sl at 512mb, it really become slowly and bad, i know , every NVIDIA, the more cheapper, example the fx5500 work better than every ati with SL, but in other games work very good the 5850. so you know, there is another solution for have open multiple SL, and good perfomance ?

i have phenom 955 , 4gb ram, windows xp, mother asus -evo and ati 5850 . ty horacios allen in world

  • I have the same Problem on HIS Radeon 4670, I had better bought the Nvidia Geforce 7950Gt instead of the Ati shit

I will never buy a ATI Card again *angry*

  • don't think so...

  • i have a 3870 and have this problem on photoshop CS4... with 9.12 drivers :|...
