A song written by Captain William W. Blackford, an engineer who served on the staff of General J.E.B. Stuart. An engineer/songwriter? Give the man props!

Performed by the inimitable Bobby Horton.

  • Great song and I've never heard it before till now. W.W. Blackford is buried in Abingdon Va, about 15 miles from where I live. Have been by there several times. My gg grandpaw served with him in 1st Va. Co.D The Washington Rifles. Thx for posting!

  • @tnstraggler Awesome!

  • Lovely video - many thanks for sharing this, mate!

Would anyone reading this be able to tell me who the gentleman at around 01:05 is?

  • John S. Mosby.

  • Ah, thank you for clearing that up! I'venly ever seen this one picture of him where he's clean-shaven so it didn't occur to me that this could indeed be Mosby.

You wouldn't happen to know where the original of THIS picture can be found, would you?

  • It's in the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond. A beautiful painting. The pic in the video is actually a photo of the painting that I took while I was there.

  • I have learned that G. Washington was actually descended from a chaplain of the Cavaliers of King Charles. His ancestor had been forced to flee to Virginia as a refugee & exile from the new Cromwell regime.

The Cavalier spirit is real, it is touching how the Civil War was probably the last occasion when such a spirit could be meaningful in a war. The train was already in use, the baloon was 1st deployed for combat. A true turning point of history. The CSA was monument to a dying history.

  • This tune.......sounds like you can feel the jostle of the horse underneath you.

    God Will Vindicate.

  • @BismarcksOtto 1:05 is a young J.E.B. Stuart

  • imagine how glorious it must have felt , the bond between man and horse as they thudered towards those who would shatter their way of life , swords raised and a battle cry on their lips as they risked all for their cause which no true man gives up without a fight

  • Happy birthday to you JEB!

  • The Confederate officer shown at 2:10 is John Pelham. He was a favorite officer of J.E.B. Stuart's, and as his chief artillerist, he helped to slow the Union advance at Fredricksburg. He was mortally wounded in the Battle of Kelly's Ford in 1863.
